JANUARY Stacking The Shelves / In My Mailbox

Stacking The Shelves is a meme hosted Tynga's Reviews. This is an opportunity for bloggers to show the books they're adding to their shelves, physical or virtual. This means you can include books you buy in physical store or online, books you borrowed from friends or the library, review books, gifts and eBooks.

In My Mailbox (IMM) is a weekly meme hosted by Kristi of The Story Siren. It gives book bloggers the opportunity to show which books they have received, bought, won, or borrowed.

If you want to participate in either memes be sure to drop by their sites and link back to their posts!

I've decided to combine these two posts because Nicole and Michelle of The Twins Read inspired me.  (Heh. Hi!) Basically, Stacking the Shelves features books I've bought/borrowed, ebooks for review, eARCs, eBooks won/given as a gift and galleys. In My Mailbox features stuff I received in the mail like physical copies of books or swag. I'll only be doing this at the end of every month from now on. It's less work for me. ;-)
On to the good stuff!

I included Unearthly by mistake. It's supposed to be part of IMM.

"Waiting On" Wednesday #8: Walking Disaster

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly meme, hosted by Jill of Breaking the Spine, that features upcoming releases that we can't wait to get our hands on.

My pick this week is...

Title: Walking Disaster (Beautiful #2)
Author: Jamie McGuire
Genre: New Adult Contemporary Romance
Publisher: Atria Books
Expected Publication: April 2nd 2013

Synopsis: Walking Disaster is Travis' POV.

How much is too much to love?

Travis Maddox learned two things from his mother before she died: Love hard. Fight harder.

In Walking Disaster, the life of Travis is full of fast women, underground gambling, and violence. Just when he thought he was invincible, Abby Abernathy brings him to his knees.

Every story has two sides. In Jamie McGuire's New York Times bestseller Beautiful Disaster Abby had her say. Now it's time to see the story through Travis's eyes.

What are you waiting on? :-)

The Voice Book Blitz: Excerpt + Giveaway (INT)

Title: The Voice
Author: Jennifer Anne Davis
Genre: Young Adult Contemporary
Publication date: January 29th, 2013

During her abduction and assault, Audrey begins to hear a voice. She hopes she’s not going crazy, because after what she’s experienced, that’s the most logical explanation. However, as she begins to listen to the voice, Audrey realizes that someone may be telepathically trying to help her.

Unfortunately, rescue isn’t all she needs. In order to leave behind the constant reminders, she flees to her Aunt Kate’s house in San Diego, and assumes a new identity. It works—until the eighteen-year-old twin boys who live next door threaten to break through the protective walls she’s worked so hard to build.

Between Caleb going out of his way to befriend her and Justin avoiding her at all costs, Audrey doesn’t know if normalcy will ever find her again. But one thing is certain: When a familiar danger resurfaces, it’s the same voice that she turns to—a voice that is not only real, but a lot closer than she realizes.

Gripping and tastefully told, The Voice is a story of healing, trust, and courage.

from Chapter 1

Lying in the dark cabin, I tried not to think about the foul smell of body odor mixed with the stench of urine. I tried not to think about how hungry I was, or when I would eat again. About the plastic zip ties cutting into my wrists, or the spider crawling up my arm. I kept trying and failing. There was nothing to do but think.

Audrey? he spoke in my mind.

“Here,” I replied, still not understanding who or what the voice was, hoping I wasn’t going crazy. Though, after what I had been through, crazy wasn’t too far off. Instead, I focused on what the voice was saying. After weeks of being stuck here, he was the only thing keeping me grounded and giving me hope.

I need you to do something for me.

He sounded drained. “Are you okay?” I asked.

I need you to scream as loud as you can. Now, Audrey! Scream!

Bill had left the cabin only five minutes earlier, and I was afraid to make any noise. What if he was still outside and heard me? Would he come back in? I was so sore and bruised that I couldn’t handle anymore.

Scream! he urged.

Finally trusting the voice, I sucked in a deep breath, closed my eyes, and screamed as loud as I could. At first I sounded like a cat that was being strangled, the sound barely audible and grating on my ears. But I kept trying, and the noise transformed into something loud and fierce.

Yell the word “help.”

“HELP!” My throat was raw, but that didn’t stop me. I took all of my hurt and anger, and used those emotions for the energy needed to sustain the scream.

Then a thumping came from the other room—maybe the front door. My body shuddered. Shimmying to the edge of the mattress, I tried to stand, but my legs gave out, and I fell to the rough, wooden floor, landing on my knees. With bound hands, I inched my way to the corner of the room, as far away from the door as possible.

Keep screaming!

I wanted to curl into a ball and disappear, but I did what the voice said and let out a shrill, loud cry for help. The sound bounced off the walls, echoing.

Wood shattered in the other room. I kept yelling, wishing that I had the power to destroy Bill with my scream.

The doorknob twisted. Please don’t hurt me again . . . please don’t touch me . . . no more, please. No more.
The door exploded open. Instead of Bill, there stood three hunters dressed in camouflage and bright orange vests. One held a shotgun, and another held an axe. I froze in horror. The men looked at one another and then back at me.

Audrey, tell them who you are. Your name.

“I’m Audrey Marshall. Please help me.”

“The kidnapped girl?” the older guy on the right asked. I nodded. “I’m calling 9-1-1. You’re going to be all right now,” he said reassuringly, his cell phone already at his ear.

“Thank you,” I whispered to the voice. But he didn’t respond.

Teaser Tuesday #5

Teaser Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by MizB at Should Be Reading
and slightly altered by Coffee, Books & Lipgloss

Basically a CBL TEASER TUESDAY works like this
  • Grab your current read
  • Share 2 “teaser” sentences from a random page or a part you rather enjoyed and post it as a teaser.
  • BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! Make sure that what you share doesn't give too much away; you don’t want to ruin the book for others!
  • As an option, you can give a short snippet of what you think so far... or not. That's optional.
  • Share the TITLE and AUTHOR too, so that other participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teaser.

Title: After Forever Ends
Authors: Melodie Ramone
Release Date: October 1st 2012 by Gingersnap Press
Buy It: Amazon
Add it to your TR List:

There was never a question as to Oliver and me being together. I don't think anyone had any questions about us; we were just as natural as the sky and earth.

Oliver's face came close to mine.

He kissed me. It was quick, smooth, and square on the lips. I felt my face go redder. I dropped my eyes and continued to chew my chocolate.

Oliver looked away casually and then turned back, "That was nice. I think you got more chocolate than I did. May I have another?"

I nodded and held out the candy bar.

That wasn't what he was talking about.

My Opinion So Far

Let me begin by saying this is one very long book. I liked how it started and the characters introduced so far but, like I always say every Tuesday, it's too soon to really form any solid opinion about it. I'll keep posting updates on Goodreads so you can just check there if you're curious.

Feature and Follow #5

Feature and Follow Friday is hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read

Q: What is the last book that kept you up late into the night just to finish it?

A: The Sea of Tranquility by Katja Millay. It took a while for me to get into the story but once I got to the point where all the magic happened, I never stopped reading it. I literally stayed up all night to finish it even if I had classes the next day. I tried going to sleep but it's like my tablet was calling me so I kept opening it. It was always "one more chapter" but you know how it is. It can never be just one more chapter. Lovely set of characters, engaging story line, overall great book. ;) (My review of The Sea of Tranquility: CLICK)

Leave a link to your Feature and Follow post and I'll check it out!
Oh and... I follow back. ;-)

Liebster Blog Award #3

I would like to thank Melanie of YA Midnight Reads for "nominating" me. I really appreciate it ;-)

I'll deviate from the Liebster Blog Award rules for and just answer the questions. I'm sorry for not playing by the rules but it's so much work :-( I'll nominate 11 bloggers in a different Liebster post but I'm afraid I can't nominate every time. I might run out of people to nominate. Heh (I'm serious)

The rules of the Liebster Award are as follows:

1. Thank your Liebster Blog Award presenter on your blog and link back to the blogger who presented this award to you;

2. Answer the 11 questions from the nominator, list 11 random facts about yourself and create 11 questions for your nominees;

3. Present the Liebster Blog Award to 11 blogs of 200 followers or less who you feel deserve to be noticed and leave a comment on their blog letting them know they have been chosen. (No tag backs) (opting out of this one for now... sorry)

4. Copy and Paste the blog award on your blog.

Questions from Melanie:

1. What is your biggest pet peeve?
The simplest grammar mistakes people consistently make but shouldn't. (e.g. you're/your, their/they're) I really don't want to be a grammar Nazi anymore but it still bothers me!

2. What do you like to do other than reading?
Watch/catch up on TV series: 2 Broke Girls, Grey's Anatomy, The Big Bang Theory, Pretty Little Liars, Modern Family, Suits

3. Do you have a habit of buying lots and lots of books?
Yes! Lately it's like I keep giving myself excuses to buy a book. Usually it's, "I'm sad. I need a new book."

4. What is your guilty obsession?
Justin Bieber's music. Don't get me wrong, I don't like Justin Bieber the person/celebrity. I just like his music. Not his music videos. Just his music. (Please don't judge me. Ha)

5. Do you have a piercing?
Just one on each earlobe.

6. Are you a morning person?
Definitely not. I'm usually crankier in the morning.

7. What is the funniest joke you've ever heard?
I can't really answer this one because the funniest joke I've heard is in Filipino. So... yeah, attempting to make it sound as funny, or even just funny in English would only be tragic. LOL

8. What is your favourite childhood book?
From The Files of Madison Finn

9. Do you still like to watch children's TV shows?
Of course! I'm 20 (turning 21 this year) and I think I'll never get tired of 'em.

10. How long do you spend blogging a day?
Err... I usually take too long like 4 or 5 hours because I can never focus on just one thing.

11. Do you think that dogs are better than cats?
Yeahuh! I have 6 dogs, by the way. So I'm very biased.

11 Random Facts About Me

1. I watch Friends while eating a bowl of instant noodles whenever I'm really really sad.

2. I own a Dell phone and I'm in love with it.

3. I think Mandy Moore is DA BOMB.

4. I love reading books by indie authors.

5. I love listening to indie music.

6. Woah does that make me a hipster?

7. I once tried not using emoticons ('haha's too) for one week. It freaked my friends out because they can never tell whether I'm pissed or not... and I loved every minute of it.

8. The next time I visit the bookstore I'll get either Anna and The French Kiss, Splintered, or The Duff: Designated Ugly Fat Friend. I've read ANTFK and DUFF but I enjoyed them so much I want a physical copy of it. As for Splintered, I haven't read it... need I say more?

9. I hate roller coaster rides.

10. It stresses me out just thinking about Shutter Island's ending.

11. That reminds me. I didn't know Shutter Island's actually a book.

What is the Liebster Blog Award?

I was really curious to find out what this was exactly seeing that there wasn't any sort of link to its host site. I did a bit of research (no really I just Googled it and clicked the first hit) and I found Sopphey's blog entry. Apparently she also wanted to find out what the Liebster Blog Award was after being nominated three times.

Having read her post, I say this is still a fun way to reach out to other bloggers. It's a bit time consuming but I think it's a nice gesture "nominating" someone. It's more like featuring blogs than anything else. The "award" in the title can be misleading. Oops. You may opt not to do the same but if you happen to pay it forward, good for you! Making blogger friends is fun!

Thanks for stopping by and have a great day! ;-)

When my mother remarried after thirteen years of being a widow, I had to move to a new town and enroll in a new school. Suddenly thrust into an entirely different kind of life, I just wanted to go home. I didn’t want to meet new people, didn’t want to leave my old friends, didn’t want to become a third wheel to my mom and her husband….and I really didn’t want to see Ryder Yates again. Ugh, I still don’t know why I turned down that too-good-to-be-true boy who flirted with me when we were attending separate schools.

But honestly, it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. It was worse.

Who knew becoming lost in a new life could help a girl find her true colors?

I write young adult paranormal romance, urban fantasy, and science fiction mostly. The Grimm Diaries series is a seven book saga that deals with retellings of fairy tales from a young adult POV – it connects most of the fairy tales together and claims to be the truth about fairy tales.
