Judging a Book by Its Cover

I am in no way trying to start my own meme. I don't even think you can call it a meme if it hasn't caught on yet. LOL

Believe me, I tried looking for a meme with this theme but they weren't actively done so I didn't want to participate. I sound like a total snob, I know. Originally I was supposed to post a topic entry that has something to do with book covers with abs and people kissing and magical swirly things but halfway through the post I felt like I was dissing a lot of books. I'm really trying to keep my blog entries positive or if I can't keep it that way, I want to be constructive at least. So after much thought, I scrapped the post.

Instead I decided to write about a couple of books I added on my To Read list just because I like how the cover looks. I don't know about you, but I have the tendency to judge a book by its cover. Sometimes I would buy a book because I think it'll look pretty on my shelf. Sometimes I won't even pick it up because I don't want other people in the bookstore giving me weird looks. I know it seems idiotic to just buy a book because it looks pretty but I can't help myself!

I feel like I might do another post like this in the coming weeks so I'll just number the blog entries as I go. Again, I'm in no way trying to create a meme. If you want to do a similar post then that's fine by me, I won't get annoyed or anything. Nothing is new under the sun after all. ;-)

Enough of that. Let's get down to business! Drum roll, please! *drum roll* (cheesy ugh).........

I don't even have to explain in detail why I like the covers. I mean just look at 'em! Clean layout, balanced photos (it's my OCD talking), appropriate fonts etc etc. I hope when I do get to read these I'll like the stories just as much as I liked the covers.

Did any book cover catch your attention? I would love to hear from you! ;-)

  1. I definitely understand that clean layout thing. Haha! I pity books with nice stories but poor cover.

    1. Yeah :( Book covers need to be as captivating as their stories!

  2. I hate to say it but if a cover isn't appealing nearly all readers will not pick it up unless you read some amazing review and it won't matter what the cover looks like, but if you know nothing about the book, your first judgement is the cover, then most of us flip to the back/inside flap to get a sneak peek. That usually seals the deal for me.

    1. I totally agree! Sometimes when I see books with two different covers I really deliberate which one I'm taking home. Of course it has to be the more appealing one. The one that'll make my shelf "prettier." Haha!

  3. I think a lot of people choose books based on a cover. I know I do it a lot. I'm trying to work on not doing it but people generally like pretty things and tend to gravitate towards them more than less attractive things.

  4. There's an interesting quote from Dean Koontz who said that there are five things that influence somebody to buy a book. He lists Cover Art as the third, just behind the author's name and subject matter of the novel. So I don't really think judging by the cover is a bad thing.

As for me, I absolutely love the book cover of Days of Blood & Starlight by Laini Taylor. The masks theme of that series is really captivating.

  5. I too believe that the cover of a book definetly catches my attention and influences whether or not I purchase the book.
