Lorin Perez’s life is finally back on track after almost losing it six years ago. She knows meeting and dating sizzling hot professional rugby player Spence Clarke is a huge part of her healing process. But with her father starting a new family, she decides to follow her best friend Caitlin to UK–Spence’s home country–and start a new life.
However, moving to UK brings certain complications in the form of Gezellig band member Nigel Whitmore, a.k.a. the one who didn’t follow through three years ago. And even though Lorin is very clear about her no commitment rule, Nigel ignores this and pursues Lorin like never before.
Caught between the man who made her feel safe and the one who makes her feel alive, will she finally be able to set her heart free and make the right choice?
In Kesh Tanglao's first book, The Real Score, I got to live out my boy band fangirl dreams through the eyes of Caitlin. In (un)breakable, I got to relive those fantasies through Caitlin's bestfriend, Lorin — spunky, passionate and one heck of a fangirl. Not only is she a hardcore gezer (fans of Gezellig), she's also big about rugby. So we basically get a peek into two different worlds. Although Lorin is mostly away from all the Philippine rugby madness, it's still a very big part of the story. While my knowledge of rugby is limited (it's like American football, only more violent), it didn't keep me from thoroughly enjoying the story. There were lots of parts that explained the sport, which I was thankful for. Aside from that, Lorin got dibs on a front row seat to all that was Gezellig. She was so used to it all that you'd think she's been around the boys her whole life. She experienced it all — being recognized by the paparazzi, having fellow fangirls hate you (#sorrynotsorry), the "low-key" parties in mansions, being friends with other celebrities. It made me unreasonably jealous of a fictional character but hey it's still undeniably enjoyable.
Then we have the romance aspect of the story, of course. Our lovable protagonist is torn between two equally swoon-worthy men. Oh the drama! How can she possibly choose, right? RIGHT! I had a hard time reading the story because I constantly went back and forth the two guys. I was so immersed in the story that I couldn't just read through it. Amid the love triangle drama, it was clear that both guys were important to Lorin as they helped her through two tough periods of her life. I love that both were given an equal opportunity to charm Lorin and the readers. I hate nothing more than a fake love triangle; the kind that obviously shows which love interest the protagonist will choose right from the get-go. But in (un)breakable the author kept me hanging on till the end, eager to know how the characters will resolve their issues.
Another reason, maybe the biggest reason, why I adore this book is how the author was able to bring out all the emotions her characters are feeling. It's one thing to write about feelings but it's quite another to make the reader feel the same. Lorin's backstory is pretty heavy and it involves an ex-boyfriend (of course). For a long period in her life, Lorin has always been bothered by her past no matter how many times she's convinced other people (and herself) that she's finally okay. I can't get over the author's beautiful (and painfully accurate) description of Lorin's heartache. Believe me, it has more to do with how good the writing is than the fact that I can relate on some level.
Then the book ends on a bittersweet note. While Lorin has sorted out her issues, someone else in her life is going through a rough patch. Just when I thought I was done with the roller coaster of emotions, it had me started all over again. Don't fret! It'll only give you more to look forward to. Kesh Tanglao's writing will hook you into a story and will keep you there. (un)breakable broke my reading slump with it's vibrant characters and unputdownable story. Let it work its magic on you too. ;)
P.S. I'm reserving the fifth star for #TeamThatGuy
